Expertise, excellence and economy helped Scotts Timber Engineering land a major contract to supply roof trusses for a new health centre under construction in Worcestershire.
Planning and design requirements for the large-scale construction project meant the centre on Dunley Road in Stourport on Severn required timber trusses instead of steels which would normally be used on a build of its size.
Scotts Timber Engineering, which is at the forefront of modern roofing technology, won the tender and designer, Loden Townsend, headed the project instructed by contractor Arthur M Griffiths Construction.
He said: “It was a big project and different to our general projects. The trusses are raised tie trusses, not standard sizes being at 13m in span and extra loads had to be applied to the underside to accommodate the air handling units (AHU) required for the surgery. They are not straightforward to manufacture and deliver. That being said, the trusses were designed and manufactured in two parts due to the height of them. Valley sets and gable ladders also had to be factored in to complete the roof.”
“I went from the CAD drawings supplied by the contractor and created the design to meet all the technical requirements for the project and then submitted our tender.
“I was delighted to hear we were successful and that we were then able to go on to production of the trusses.
“At 1,104 sq m it is the biggest project I have worked on and we have manufactured and supplied 161 trusses at 13m in length along with 144 top hat trusses, on budget and on time for the contractor, enabling them to keep on track with construction of the medical centre.”
Paul Bennett, Arthur M Griffiths Construction’s project manager for the new medical centre, welcomed Scotts Timber Engineering’s input on the construction.
“Normally a project of this size would have seen the roof constructed with steel supports, but because of planning restrictions and the need to keep the building sympathetic to the local architecture the design required a more traditional approach,” he said.
“It is a large area and we knew it would require a large number of wooden trusses and that they would have to be bespoke to meet the demands of the building.
Scotts Timber Engineering hit the mark on design and cost. They have been very proactive with us and everything has run very smoothly from start to finish.
“It has been unusual to have so many timber trusses and parts on site and we have had to deploy cranes to unload them as well as lift them into place, but they have always arrived on time and there has not been a single issue.
“It has been a straightforward process working with Loden and the team and we would not hesitate to work with them again.”
