Scotts Timber Engineering Origins

Scotts of Thrapston was established well over 100 years ago now, and trusses were part of the offering from the early days, albeit on a much smaller scale than today, and mainly to support stabling with heavier roofing options.

In the mid-to-late ’90s, organic growth took off for the truss and joist operation – partly because of stronger economic conditions and partly because the company was focusing on specialist joinery at the time.

Those involved were given the freedom to develop it with little interference, and by the early 2000s, it had become a significant part of the business.

The original ambition was to purchase an existing operation, but with limited options, we decided to start Scotts of Redditch—initially in Shirley before making a more permanent move to Redditch. The goal was to serve the housebuilding sector in the M40/M5 corridor, and the central location proved invaluable.

In 2012, as the economy and housebuilding sector were starting to pull clear of the 2008 financial crash, and with a push for greater focus and ambition, we rebranded our truss and joist operations at our Redditch and Thrapston factories as Scotts Timber Engineering, adopting the dark blue identity to differentiate ourselves from traditional equestrian and leisure buildings, including our summerhouses.

And here we are. Scotts Timber Engineering still very much sits within the wider Scotts operation, but has become a major player in its own right in the UK housebuilding sector’s supply chain, designing and manufacturing for many national, regional, and of course local housebuilders and developers.

The ambition has not dimmed. Scotts Timber Engineering is a hive of quietly efficient activity, and has been bucking industry trends over the last challenging months, achieving steady growth.
