Designer passes exams with flying colours!
Name: Loden Townsend
Age: 21 years old
Job Title: Truss and Joist Designer
Loden Townsend has been working for approximately three years at Scotts Timber Engineering starting in manufacturing as a Truss Labourer. He has always had an interest in design and so when the opportunity of a Designer arose in the team he jumped at the chance.
We spoke to Loden to find out what he learnt from his course and what he has enjoyed about working with Scotts Timber Engineering.
Q. What did your course entail?
A. I completed two courses which were held at Wolf Systems in Coventry. The first was in roof truss design and the second in floor joist design, both took place over three days each. The roof truss design course, which I completed in 2019, entailed understanding the terminology in the industry, the calculations and learning how to use the Wolf Systems’ software.
I then completed the floor joist design course in 2020. During this course I learnt how the floor joist structure works and the importance and benefits metal web joists can bring.
At the end of each course I had an hour long exam in which I achieved 93% in roof truss design and 95% in my floor joist design exam. I was really thrilled with the results I had achieved and definitely learnt everything I needed to, to perform my job role.
Q. Tell us a bit about what your job role entails
A. In my role I am responsible for producing detailed drawings and quotations for both roof trusses and metal web joists. I review the architects’ drawings that are sent in to the team and gather the correct information to design the elements required, to meet their needs.
I have frequent communication with my customers to ensure they understand their drawings and quotations, and are happy with their orders.
Q. Why did you join Scotts Timber Engineering?
A. Previous to my current role, I started in Scotts’ manufacturing factory, as a Truss Labourer. I joined Scotts Timber Engineering as I have always had an interest in design. When I was given the opportunity to move from the factory floor to the office I was determined to excel as I have a passion for the role.
Q. What made you want to work in your role and what do you enjoy about it?
A. I have always had an interest in design as I studied Art, IT and Media at A Level. I was hoping to go to university to study Graphic Design, but, when this opportunity was available I was more than happy to go straight into my career in the timber engineering industry.
It was great that Scotts supported me to do the roof truss and floor joist design course, which is a great benefit of working here. It showed me the company encourages its’ employees to help them excel in their career aspirations.
I really enjoy my job as I am constantly challenged. My role on a day-to-day basis is very varied as I deal with new enquires and design intricate roofs for a variety of customers.
Q. What are your career aspirations?
A. I do hope to still be working within the industry and progressing at Scotts as a Designer, and constantly developing my knowledge and skills within timber engineering.
